The firm’s Data Protection Unit (DPU)
forms part of the specialist
Information Technology Law and
IP
Law Department of the firm. The firm’s DPU is one of the few specialist
units of its kind in Malta.
The firm has devised a user-friendly
data protection auditing tool for its clients. Our lawyers act as a
Personal Data Representatives for a number of corporate clients and
liaise with the Data Protection Commissioner’s Office on matters of
a Privacy nature. The firm is currently also setting up data
retention policies and related systems for several clients for the
purposes of compliance with this new regulations in the field of
data protection.
The DPU’s main role is that of ensuring legal compliance and correct
processing in terms of relevant regulations as well as assisting the
clients by providing advice on policies regulating internal data
protection and related IT security as well as devising custom-made
data retention policies.
The Overriding Policy of our DPU
While we will not hesitate to advise on any radical changes to be
effected to bring the client in conformity, our DPU’s emphasis is on
making those minimal changes absolutely necessary to bring the
client in line with current legislation so as to ensure that the
clients’ core operations continue uninterruptedly.
