March 2004: Objection by Employers'
Associations to Data Protection Fees
The Malta Chamber of Commerce & Enterprise, the
Malta Employers Association (MEA), the Malta Federation of Industry (FOI)
and the Malta Hotels & Restaurants Association (MHRA) are objecting to the
high fees charges for notification and renewal under the Data Protection
Act.
The Associations claim that these fees amount to an “additional tax@ that
will increase operating expenses and to add to the current competition
problems faced by Maltese businesses.
The four organizations said discussions were being held with the authorities
to have notification fees revised and that employers should expect
developments on the matter from the above organizations as the latter are
jointly engaged in making representations on their behalf.
